Otis Spann is my favorite blues pianist, and he also has quite a good voice. This is a collection of songs from 1965 to 1969, many of which have been previously released.I bought the CD because it has a live version of "I Live the Life I Love" I hadn't heard before. Another winner from this session is "Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had." On both songs Muddy Waters is the vocalist, with Otis and Muddy's band providing backup. "Tin Pan Alley" is also from this session; a minor-flavored tune featuring Otis on vocal -- truly chilling! Some other real standouts are "Get Your Hands Out of My Pocket," "Who's Out There," and "Lovin' You." Otis sings and plays piano, with Johnny Young providing uniquely appropriate guitar. Bass and drums are masterfully handled by Jimmy Lee Morris and S.P. Leary respectively. James Cotton plays harp. This is one of those sessions where everything was spot on. As a result, Jimmy Cotton is able to transcend his instrument, and his harp playing becomes a voice from the Void -- screaming, crying, moaning, wailing. After listening to these tunes, I had tears streaming down my cheeks -- and I've heard this material before! The music pierces you like a bitter winter wind blowing off of Lake Michigan! In the words of Otis Spann, "One mo' time Brother Cotton."
