Product Description Formed in 1990, Cul De Sac are a band that incorporates elements of pyschedlic music, krautrock, post-rock, alternative and surf music, delivering a unique set of recordings and performances through the years. In "I Don't Wanna Go To Bed", their sophomore release, Cul De Sac's sound is given an immediacy of improvisation, showcasing their talents as composers "on the fly". Review After Cul de Sac's 1992 debut, Ecim, was met with a warm critical response, there were some complications that put off the group's next studio recording until 1996. In the interim, this lo-fi compilation of mostly improvised experimental rock was issued to an equally awestruck music underground. I Don't Want to Go to Bed is a collage of weighty Cul de Sac rehearsal tape highlights compiled by drummer Chris Guttmacher between 1990 and 1993. While the 11 tracks might strike the uninitiated as more than a little aimless, Krautrock and deconstructionist fans (post-rock and otherwise) will marvel at this unorthodox craftwork. While the subtle surf and experimental jazz-rock textures that help propel records like China Gate are nowhere to be found on I Don't Want to Go to Bed, the herky-jerky currents ("Lower Hate, Massachusetts"), Middle Eastern melodies ("This Is the Metal That Do Not Burn"), and spacious meditations ("Doldrums") make a textural mark all their own... --All Music Guide
This is a collection of practice sessions that the instrumental rock band Cul de Sac recorded on a 4-track cassette recorder. The sound quality is lo-fi but decent. The performances are occasionally meandering, but more often brilliant displays of the rhythm section's propulsive power supporting Glenn Jones's melodic improvisations and Robin Amos's synthesizer whooshes, beeps and blips. It's interesting to hear a band's rehearsals as they try out new ideas that occasionally fall flat but more often succeed. Those who enjoy improvised music and instrumental rock should give this album a listen!
